Last winter, when the previews for Final Fantasy were released, my husband (who was then my fiancé), Paul, eagerly watched them over and over. “Look at the animation!” he exclaimed. And I have to admit that – even though I’m not a programmer like he is – I was pretty impressed with the computer-generated graphics. So I agreed to check it out.

I really didn’t expect much of a plot, and although there was one somewhere, it was a bit hokey (to borrow Paul’s word). It’s a strange new age sci-fi story that takes place several years after a meteor full of angry phantom aliens crashes into Earth. Dr. Sid (Donald Sutherland) and Dr. Aki Ross (Ming-Na) are trying to save the planet before it’s too late – yet without harming Gaia, the Earth Spirit.

So the plot was pretty typical sci-fi (which, if you really like sci-fi, could be great), but the effects…! It’s amazing to see how much computer animation has grown. And I can laugh all I want about how the lips and the words weren’t in-synch, and it reminded me of a poorly-dubbed kung-fu movie – but it really was pretty impressive. The spectacular animation alone made up for the mediocre plot. And I actually enjoyed watching it – just for the “ooooh and aaaaah” factor.
