There aren’t a lot of hockey movies out there –- other than all 36 Mighty Ducks movies. There is, however, one that die-hard hockey fans embrace as their own. Slap Shot is the hockey guys’ cult film. It’s what they watch when their favorite team has the night off.

Slap Shot is about a struggling minor-league hockey team –- the Charlestown Chiefs –- who just can’t win. To make matters worse, the town’s livelihood –- the big factory –- is shutting down, and it looks like it’s the Chiefs’ last season.

Determined to keep the team (and his career) alive, coach Reggie Dunlop (Paul Newman) decides to spread a rumor that the team’s being sold -– but only if they can turn it into a winning team. To do that, they’re forced to play dirty.

With the help of the Hansen brothers, a trio of merciless goons, the Chiefs beat up on the rest of the teams in the league (literally!). And not only does their record improve, but they also gain an enormous following.

Slap Shot is a look at the hockey life (written by Nancy Dowd, whose brother is Jim Dowd of the Minnesota Wild). It’s loud. It’s profane. It’s bloody. And it’s hilarious. The Hanson brothers alone are worth the price of rental (or purchase, for that matter).

If you’re a hockey fan who yells at the TV during the game –- and cheers during the fights -– then this movie is a must-see. In fact, how can you call yourself a hockey fan if you haven’t seen it?
