Sonic Youth has always been one of those bands you either love or hate. There’s never an in-between on that factor. What do you do when you love their earlier works, such as Dirt, but can’t find the stomach to pop in their latest work, NYC Ghosts & Flowers?

I struggle with that question. Especially since Sonic Youth has been a band that continually is one step ahead of the mainstream pop commercial ideal. I give them credit for being so innovative. They were clearly “alternative” before it was considered a cool label.

NYC Ghosts & Flowers is out there. Guitar chords are purposely out of tune and eerie. Vocals don’t flow harmoniously with the songs. I can see their genius, but I don’t like it. Even after a pint of Jack, I still can’t see the point of the disc.

Sonic Youth could be ahead of their time once again. If that’s the case, buy the disc when it’s hip. For now, don’t bother.
