If this album were an animal, it would be a puppy –- just a cute little furry thing that makes you smile. It’s just so sweet-and-innocent-sounding.
The music is simple. The album begins with “Girl,” just a girl and a piano -– reminiscent of a 40s lounge. And the rest of the songs range from simple guitar melodies to catchy Latin-sounding songs like “Cuscutlan,” to happy and carefree tunes like “Accidently Kelly Street.”
Marvin takes a little getting used to, though. At first, I didn’t like it. At all. Perhaps that’s because it has the personality of a perky high school cheerleader. Or maybe it was solely because I’d felt that Frente had mangled one of my old favorite dance songs, “Bizarre Love Triangle” (originally by New Order). Whatever the case, it wasn’t long before it grew on me -– and I found that I couldn’t help but love this album (even their version of “Bizarre Love Triangle”).
