If Social Distortion and Bad Religion had a love child, Face to Face would most likely be their offspring. Having more than a decade of albums under their belt, Face to Face is out with yet another incredible disc, How to Ruin Everything.
Face To Face is a little-known band who has been on countless compilation CD’s. Their music shows up on ESPN’s X-Games and any type of skater punk programs. The band’s lyrics are written by lead vocalist and guitarist, Trever Keith. He’s joined by Pete Parada on drums and Scott Shiflett on bass.
The fifteen driving punk tracks are what make this album so good. If a disc is going to catch me the first time, a band better put the song with the best opening riff on track one. They do just that with “Bill of Goods.” They quickly jump into “Take-Away,” which the song does. It takes flight and doesn’t end until the last chord of the last song.
Good lyrical content is another factor in my big fake book called What Makes a Real Band According to Mr. Mark. Keith has some profound words to say. The music might feel light but with lyrics from the song “Graded on a Curve,” “Put the blinders on and believe in someone else. You’re not what they want that’s exactly what they sell.” Most of the lyrics are dark. But who the hell really pays attention to the lyrics? Oh wait, that’s what I always told my mother when I listened to Motley Crue back in the 80s.
These guys are tight. Real musicians who put a smile on my face every time I pop their CD in my player. How to Ruin Everything is like the way I drive. Fast with lots of winding curves. Buy it -- you won’t be disappointed.
