Imagine a postmodern psychological thriller like Momento with a bigger budget. Now throw in some sci-fi elements (though it's hard, somehow, to call this strict sci-fi), Tom Cruise, Cameron Diaz, and Penelope Cruz, and some interesting cinematography, and you get Vanilla Sky, a trippy film that will keep you guessing until the end.

Granted, the ending would be really hard to guess until you get there because of its bizarreness (don’t worry, I won’t tell you too much), so it might not be satisfying for those of you mystery lovers who are trying to figure stuff out before the end. But it’s still an intriguing film.

Like I said, I won’t tell you too much about the plot, but it’s centered around Tom Cruise’s character—he plays a confused rich man who inherited his father’s company and then was plunged into a series of traumatic events. Throughout the movie he’s trying to figure out what’s really happened to him.

This movie is best watched, I think, when you’re slightly sleepy or really caffeinated—something a bit different than your average state. Its dreamlike train of events can be incredibly confusing to the completely rational mind. It’s one of those movies I’m not sure what I think about (still trying to work it all out, actually, though I found it slightly easier and less discomforting than Momento somehow). But it was definitely worth renting, if only for the experience.
