Industrial music went out of style in 2000. It was a good thing the band Filter saw it coming and changed their sound on their sophomore hit, Title of Record. After about a four-year break, the boys of Filter are back with their third album, The Amalgamut.

This CD is not for just anyone. It’s for people who want to hear music that’s similar to Mellencamp and The Boss with a little rawer edge. It has a hardcore backbone to it with a little bit of softness. And that is exactly why this CD rocks!

The first song “You Walk Away,” has a little bit of the industrial feel to it, but then develops into a heavy feeling that bands today seem to be lacking. The lyrics to this song could fall upon many people. It has the theme of developing a life that you want to live, but the people that are close to you leave because they don’t like the way you’re living.

Many things have happened since Filter released their last CD. “Columind” deals with one of those instances. It makes fun of the students that went on the shooting spree in Columbine. The kids were upper-middle class and felt that they didn’t have everything, so they wanted to get everything. Now that it’s all over, nobody really cares about those kids. It’s an excellent song that takes a look at the insanely stupid thing they did.

“My Long Walk to Jail” describes just that. No, the singer didn’t go to jail, but it portrays someone making that trip to prison. It addresses the feelings of the inmate. The inmate first thinks that he/she is a hard-ass and then slowly becomes more and more afraid of what is going to happen.

Just like on Title of Record, there are a few slower songs to accompany the highly energetic ones. “The Missing,” “The Only Way (is the Wrong Way),” and “God Damn Me” are just a few of them. They are perfectly placed throughout the CD and perfectly written.

Filter has followed up their sophomore set quite nicely. I have a hard time getting away from this CD. It speaks the truths about the some of the hardships the country has gone through, it addresses aspects of life, and it could possibly inspire. This CD is one for any collection.
