I lost a lot of sleep over this book. The problem is that I like to read for a few minutes at night before I turn out the lights -- but then I’d end up lying there for hours in the dark, the tears streaming down my cheeks as I tried to keep from bursting out in yet another fit of giggles. My laughter often woke my poor husband, who is overjoyed that I’ve finished reading the book and can now move on to something less guffaw-inducing.

Guys: Not Real Bright -- and Damn Proud of It! is a collection of essays by Canadian humorist William Thomas. His stories cover everything from the glamorous life of a writer to traveling through Europe with an overzealous Canada Post employee to the less-than-successful hijacking of a Canadian bus (which honestly had me giggling for hours).

It was definitely to my advantage, however, that I’m married to a Canadian and know the country rather well -- though, at times, I was still left in the dark when Thomas started talking politics. So if you’re not a Canadian, you may miss a few laughs -- though I promise that there are plenty to spare.

Pick up a copy of Guys. The brief essays are great for a quick laugh in the middle of an otherwise humorless day. Be warned, however, that it might be best not to read this book within three hours of bedtime.
