Movie critic Richard Roeper has seen a whole heck of a lot of films in his day -- the good, the bad, and the ugly. And in his new book, Ten Sure Signs a Movie Character is Doomed, and Other Surprising Movie Lists, Roeper uses his experience to complete page after page of movie-related lists.

The lists vary in nature. Some are little-known facts -- like those listing the multitude of actresses who have played characters named Annie, actresses who have played prostitutes, and actors who have played drunks. Many are strictly opinion -- like the best (and worst) sports movies of all times, movies that shouldn’t have won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and “The 40 worst movies I’ve ever seen.” Some are just plain funny -- like “9 rules of drinking in the movies” and “13 great perks of being a movie character.”

In reading through this book, you’ll learn about the ever-increasing age gap between Michael Douglas and his leading ladies. You’ll be reminded of great movie quotes. And you might even find a movie or two that you’ll have to pick up on your next outing to the video store.

I enjoyed this book more as I continued to read. Some parts of the front of the book are just lists -- mostly of people I’d never heard of or movies I’d never seen. And some weren’t all that interesting. But as the book progressed and the lists became more substantial, I was much more likely to laugh out loud and share parts with those around me. I wouldn’t advise you to read it all at once -- from cover to cover -- but it makes a great coffee table book (or perhaps a bathroom book) for any movie fan. It’s a great conversation starter -- full of laughs and lines and little-known facts.
