The recording industry has told the American people that the post-grunge sound of Tonic, The Verve Pipe, Toad the Wet Sprocket, and Dishwalla is no longer cool. So without the heavy touring schedules, artists are able to branch out. For example, Donny Brown from The Verve Pipe is producing albums by 19 Wheels. Brian Vander Ark, the lead vocalist for The Verve Pipe, has gone on to record his first solo album, Resurrection.

Resurrection has an untraditional feel to it. By untraditional, I mean that it doesn’t have the cookie cutter Top 40 sound. Some of the songs have a Verve Pipe sound to it, while many of the other songs are stripped-down, so as to concentrate on BVA’s vocals and his acoustic guitar playing.

The lyrics to all of his songs are straightforward but still have the depth of ambiguous lyrics that other talented bands miss. Songs like “Mileage,” “And Then You Went Away,” and “Second Hand” demonstrate this beautifully. It had me singing each one from the start.

A few of the songs give a glimpse at what BVA’s career was like with TVP. “Written and Erased,” begins with “as soon as something’s popular -- it’s written and erased.” The final song, “Front Row Junkies” describes the fans who come to see the show and how BVA feels on those nights.

Resurrection is an extremely good CD, put together by an extremely talented musician. If BVA comes to a town near you, I strongly suggest going to see him. All the information on tours and music is at www.bvamusic.com.
