The Santa Clause 2 is an unusual sequel. It retains most of the original cast—and, as sequels go, it’s surprisingly good. I saw The Santa Clause 2 at the movies last year and recently viewed it at home with my family. I enjoyed it even more on the second viewing.

The Santa Clause is that when anything happens to Santa, the person who finds his clothes must put them on and become the next Santa. A divorced dad, played by Tim Allen, took the job in the first film, and now, eight years later, he’s settled in nicely at the North Pole. We see Santa/Tim supervising his elves with a jolly hand and even playing the odd game of football.

But there’s trouble ahead—namely another Santa Clause. This one states that Santa must find a wife before Christmas Eve, only 28 days away, or else face “de-Santa-fication.” To make matters worse, he learns that his son, Charlie (a small boy in the first movie but now a troubled teenager), has appeared on the Naughty List.

Santa’s got to get home to somehow find a wife and counsel his son. But he’s also needed at the Pole. No problem, though. An elf assistant suggests creating a false Santa to handle the toy chores, and away the real Santa goes, riding home on Comet.

I don’t want to spoil the wonderful plot developments, but suffice it to say that the holiday is eventually saved—thanks to the Tooth Fairy (trust me, it works).

Lots of laughs here, as well as warmth and heart. The scene with the faculty Christmas party will get you right here. Don’t forget to wait for the requisite shot of Santa, his sleigh, and eight not-so-tiny reindeer silhouetted against the moon as they dash away, dash away, dash away all.
