Tired of watching a bunch of presidential
hopefuls on TV, yammering on about how great they are and how horrible everyone else is,
my husband and I decided to turn off the political commercials and turn on a political
comedy…
Former presidents Matt Douglas (James Garner) and Russell P.
Kramer (Jack Lemmon) have been bitter political rivals for decades. So when the
democrats dig up a scandal that seems to show that Kramer accepted kickbacks while in
office, Douglas is eager to find the proof and destroy his rival. But when Douglas and
Kramer both get a little too close to the truth—that the deal was actually made by
Kramer’s vice president, William Haney (Dan Aykroyd), who now happens to be the
president—they end up running for their lives. Together.
With a crazed
NSA hit man on their tails, Kramer and Douglas try to rush across the country to find
proof of Haney’s guilt—while bickering and arguing and taking as many jabs as possible at
one another along the way.
Now is the perfect time to watch My Fellow
Americans—amid the political debates and commercials and bitter rivalries of the
upcoming election. Lemmon and Garner are hilarious together. And while I pretty much
expected the jokes and the bickering to get old after a while, they never did. The movie
is chock-full of surprisingly funny one-liners and comical characters—from playboy
Douglas to stodgy old-timer Kramer to the not-so-bright Dan-Quayle-ish vice president.
The DVD also includes a blooper reel that shows take after take of Jack Lemmon
giggling—which, like the movie itself, is surprisingly amusing.
If you’re
tired of election-year TV, pop this movie into your DVD player. In fact, you might want
to buy a copy of your own—after all, there are a lot of primaries and debates and
mud-slinging commercials to go before November.
