Back in 1995, while fellow Seattle bands were still releasing angst-filled grunge albums
(not that there’s anything wrong with that), The Presidents of the United States of
America released their self-titled debut album—a quirky collection of super-short,
super-silly songs about fruit and critters. It’s only 38 minutes long, and the songs
average less than three minutes each.
The unique down-home sound may be
a bit twangy at times, but don’t worry—it’s a good twang. Their style is a bit
Weezer-like, and their sense of humor is reminiscent of bands like They Might Be Giants.
They even mock themselves on the album. While many bands often have the token
we’re-the-greatest-just-watch-us-become-superstars song, the Presidents have the
opposite—a short, energetic song called “We Are Not Going to Make It.” You may recall
other songs, like “Peaches” (whose lyrics are little more than “Movin’ to the country /
Gonna eat a lot of peaches”) or “Lump.” And songs like the fast-paced “Boll Weevil” and
“Back Porch” only make the album even better.
The Presidents of the United
States of America are goofy and irreverent and just plain fun. Pick up their debut—and
keep an eye out for their new album, Love Everybody.
