I won’t deny that I occasionally love a good, ridiculously sophomoric film.
I freely admit that my DVD collection features such idiotic classics as UHF and Encino Man. And
I’m not the least bit ashamed. Sure, I enjoy smart, well-written films from time to
time. I enjoy action and even a little drama. But in a world filled with enough action
and drama to give even the most relaxed person an ulcer, comedy is crucial. After a
long, stressful day, there’s nothing I love more than escaping my to-do lists and having
a good laugh.
Along the same sophomoric lines as the American Pie
trilogy (see N&W.com’s reviews of American Pie 2 and
American
Wedding) and Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure is Dude, Where’s My
Car?. Ashton Kutcher and Seann William Scott play Jesse and Chester, two slackers
who wake up after a night of partying to realize that they have no idea what they did the
night before—nor do they have any idea what happened to Jesse’s car. Jesse and Chester’s
girlfriends, The Twins, Wanda and Wilma (Jennifer Garner and Marla Sokoloff), are furious
because the boys trashed their house—and, to make matters worse, it’s their anniversary,
and Jesse and Chester’s super-cool presents for the twins are still in Jesse’s missing
car. So the two take off on an adventure to piece together their night—and find Jesse’s
car. The path they take is lined with hot chicks, bullies, space nerds, and an angry
gender-challenged stripper who’s looking for the briefcase of stolen money that she
foolishly entrusted to the guys for safe-keeping.
Dude, Where’s My
Car? is a far-fetched, ADD-induced slacker movie, full of sophomoric humor—and that’s
exactly what makes it fun. The story is creative—you definitely never know what’s going
to happen next. And while the laughs are cheap, and the scenes are usually totally
absurd, that’s often just the thing you need after a tough day in the way-too-serious
real world. If you need a break from reality and a few cheap laughs, Dude
is just what the doctor ordered.
