While working out at the gym, trying to build back her muscle after being shot in the arm while solving a missing persons case in B is for Burglar, Kinsey Millhone meets Bobby Callahan, who’s also trying to recover from a serious injury. Nine months earlier, Bobby was in a car accident that killed his best friend and left Bobby near death and scarred for life. He’s convinced that the “accident” was no accident at all—someone ran him off the road. But, thanks to the accident, there are a lot of things Bobby can’t remember—like who was trying to kill him or why they’d want to do that. So he hires Kinsey to help jog his memory and save his life.
Kinsey instantly becomes attached to Bobby—and she’s determined to keep him alive. But just a few days after they meet, Bobby is killed in yet another “accident”—and Kinsey decides to stay on the case until it’s solved.
Sue Grafton’s Alphabet Mysteries are refreshing for me. I always tend to reach for one after I’ve read something more deep and tiring—much like you reach for a cold, refreshing glass of milk after a rich dessert. They’re fun and interesting to read, and I can finish one in a few days without a problem.
And C is for Corpse is no exception. The story will keep you guessing, and it all comes to a conclusion after a few pages of heart-pounding action (though I’ll admit I would have preferred a few more pages of heart-pounding action leading up to the end). Like the other books in this series, C is a great read—quick and easy and perfect for the commute to work or some casual lunch-break reading.
