The intensity of the sound on Sketches of Spain is remarkable and, at times, erratic. Yet Davis’ sound is clean, his style is unique and every track here is rendered from the very belly of his heart.

It opens with the tender and romantic “Concierto De Aranjuez.” This one is peppered with intense riffs of powerful, majestic horns (the kind of horns that conjure images of matadors). It’s strong on bass and tantalizingly gentle on percussion. “Will O The Wisp” carries the listener on a rollicking roller coaster of sound. I can guarantee that you’ll recognize “Saeta.” It is the song that every human being was born with in their blood and a staple for the soundtracks of many classic movies. “Solea” is majestic and thoughtful with gorgeous horn stylings.

I must warn you, there are pictures Miles smoking cigarettes included in the liner notes. Back then everyone smoked and there was little chance of offending anyone. But despite his habit, what a set of lungs he had. That man could WAIL!!!!

This is a 1997 digitally re-mastered release of the renowned 1959 recording by the father of fusion. Sketches of Spain is a magnificent, soulful, completely instrumental work; a timeless classic and undoubtedly an integral part of any true jazz lover’s collection.
