Before heading off to college, Jenny Taylor (Amanda Bynes) heads off to the Caribbean with her best friend, Ryan (Jonathan Bennett), to spend the summer working as a lifeguard at a posh resort. It’s not just any posh resort, though—it’s the favorite resort of rock star Jason Masters (Chris Carmack). And Jenny—Jason’s number-one obsessive fan—is hoping to run into him sometime over the summer. Unfortunately, she’s not alone. Jenny’s arch nemesis, Alexis (Jamie-Lynn DiScala), is there, too—and she, too, is determined to meet Jason.
When Jason shows up at the resort on a short layover before his next concert, Jenny weasels her way into working as a waitress on Jason’s sunset pirate cruise. She finally gets a minute alone with Jason, but he’s already pretty drunk—and a sudden storm causes him to fall overboard. So Jenny tosses him a lifeboat and jumps in to save him.
The next morning, Jenny and Jason float toward an island. Jason hurts his ankle, leaving Jenny to try to find help—but it looks like they’ve landed on a deserted island. When Jenny begins searching for food, though, she discovers that they’re not far from the resort—but she decides to keep it a secret so she can spend more time alone with the man of her dreams.
Meanwhile, the whole world is searching for Jason—and Ryan is worried that he may have just lost the love of his life.
Lovewrecked is a fluffy teen chick flick with a predictable story and a cast of stereotypical characters: the mean girl, the shallow but gorgeous guy that everyone loves, the sweet guy who’s secretly in love with his best girl friend, the clueless girl caught in the middle. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a horrible movie. Bynes may be slightly irritating in the beginning, but she’ll grow on you—and the film’s subject matter is pretty tame, making it a cute and perfectly acceptable slumber party movie.
But if you’re old enough to know that the guy who plays Jenny’s hard-nosed boss (Alfonso Ribeiro) once played Ricky’s friend Alfonso on Silver Spoons—or even if you’re old enough to recognize him as the Fresh Prince’s cousin, Carlton—you’re probably too old for this movie. Because while it may be a fun movie for teenage girls, it’s not destined to become a teen chick flick classic. Amanda Bynes may be cute, but she’s no Molly Ringwald. And Jonathan Bennett is no Jon Cryer. You’ve heard the story—and most of the jokes—before. So it’s best to leave this one to the kids.
