I have a confession to make: I’ve become an American Idol junkie. I’m not alone though. There are millions of other television viewers in this country who love watching this singing competition. I have not watched every season, and this is the first season I have seen the show from the very beginning. I used to say that I didn’t like watching the auditions, but this year I thought I’d watch “some” of the audition shows. Well, guess what? I got hooked after watching the very first show and haven’t missed one since!

What is this fascination with American Idol? Is it the singing? The competition? Curiosity about the popularity of the show? Or is it the judges’ opinions of the performers that we’re interested in hearing? I believe it’s all that and more.

I personally enjoy watching singers. I have always loved to sing, have had vocal training, and performed when I was a young(er) woman. I also loved the old variety shows that were on television about “100” years ago. I really miss that. So, my love of music, singing, and hearing new talent, has drawn me to this show.

I truly was never crazy about competition among performers because I feel that everyone is talented in his/her own way, and there’s not one necessarily “better” than another. One person may be a great blues singer, while another’s talent lies in country singing.

What I don’t like about the show is that the viewers vote for their favorite performer. Are we all in the music business? Do we all understand musical talent? Do we all vote for the “best” singer, or is it more a popularity contest? He’s cute! She’s sexy! He’s funny! Why do we get to vote up to five times, anyway? I believe that if there is to be a competition, it should be judged by a panel of judges who are all involved in the music business.

Having said what I don’t like, here’s what I do like. I love seeing young people so interested in a musical career. I’m excited for them and like to see who’s ultimately going to be the big winner, the one who wins the recording contract.

Loving music and singing, I also like to think of this show as a form of entertainment. I would prefer that it wasn’t a competition, but if this is the only way I can get my entertainment on television, I’ll take it. I was shocked to learn that approximately 37 million people view American Idol each week. I think that lots of people who, although they claim to dislike the show (especially men), are curious about what all this Idol craze is about.

Don’t we all just love to hate Simon? Admit it, all you Idol watchers, we’re all dying to hear Simon’s criticisms and many times, we’re actually agreeing with him. Guilty as charged here. Even though he can be rude and insensitive, which is totally uncalled for, as far as talent, he knows what he’s talking about.

So, I am glued to my set, watching every competition and elimination, cheering on each competitor, making my own evaluations, agreeing or disagreeing with Randy, Paula, and Simon, and looking forward to the upcoming shows. Please do not call me up during American Idol time. I refuse to take any phone calls while watching the only show that I’m hooked on. I don’t want to miss one moment. How will I know what’s happened? It’s bad enough anticipating the withdrawal pains I’ll be experiencing after this season’s show is over. Yes, I’m an Idol junkie, but hey, who am I hurting?
