If you’re in the mood for knock-down, drag-out freestyle brawl with no holds barred, you can’t go wrong with this flick. Hip Hop Life was created to give exposure to aspiring hip hop artists. And after several preliminary freestyle competitions, we’re left with the best of the best. Comedian T.J. Kirkland hosts, the statuesque Brit D.J. Sassy spins, and Jadakiss, MC Lyte, and Freeway make up the judges’ panel. The contenders are Detroit and Houston. Hold on to your hats people, because you’re in for one hell of a ride.

There are plenty of very clever, quick-witted artists featured here—and they’re banging out a whole load of love. At times, the wit runs a bit dry, though I didn’t find that disappointing because when it happened, the raunch factor absolutely skyrocketed. The language is unconscionable, and if only I had $1.00 for every time I heard the n-word, I could easily retire in luxury. So enter with caution and a sick sense of humor.

My favorite part was at the beginning, before the sparring begins. The competitors play a delightful game, involving Kirkland removing random objects from a large bin. The rapper on call would have to incorporate the names of the objects Kirkland pulled into his or her freestyle. This made for improv at its very finest. A lad named Hostyle from Detroit stole the show on this one. Still, I give a strong nod to Mookie Jones, who handled the maracas admirably.

This is real, raw, and gritty stuff, and it includes captivating interviews with the artists. Performances by Young Jeezy, Fat Joe, Rick Ross, and Trina add even more energy to this show. A bonus mix-tape is also included with the DVD. It’s a fantastic listen—upbeat, danceable throughout—and it’s perfect for your next road trip.
