This is a cleverly-structured mix of fabulous classics with a generous amount of play time (28 tracks worth). Different themes are grouped together so it plays much like an engaging beach story. It’s mostly cheerful fare, rich with the magnificent vocal harmonies that made The Beach Boys famous.
It kicks off with a nice opener - “All Summer Long,” is an upbeat ditty, guaranteed to have your feet tapping. Next is the carefree, lighthearted “Catch a Wave.” I’ll always be a huge fan of any song that whisks me off to a tropical paradise and “Hawaii” does just that, conjuring images grass skirts and brilliant sunsets.
The Boys wouldn’t be boys without traveling tunes - complete with lusty motor sound effects. “Little Honda” is breezy and danceable. “409” has a good beat and excellent vocals.
Things turn playfully romantic with “You’re So Good To Me” and “Then I Kissed Her.” Both tracks remind me a lot of the Beatles. Then, just like in real life, trouble erupts in paradise and melancholy sets in with “Kiss Me, Baby” and “Please Let Me Wonder.” This all leads to pondering the inevitable question, “Why Do Fools Fall In Love.”
Eventually the sun comes out again with one of the most sublimely beautiful ballads ever written. “Surf’s Up” is one of those rare, feel-good species of ballads, featuring stellar vocals peppered with a perfect mix of horns and keys. This track alone is worth the price of admission.
This is perfect listening for a balmy summer day. Take it to the beach or pop it in the player when you’re firing up the grill.
