Although the brawny blue superhero, The Tick, and his faithful ex-accountant sidekick, Arthur, took on some of The City’s greatest villains in The Tick Vs. Season One, it seems that evil never retires and moves to Florida—so the terrific twosome is back for more in the two-disc, 12-episode collection, The Tick Vs. Season Two.

Season two of this delightfully quirky cartoon (based on the comics by Ben Edlund) finds The Tick battling a cast of bizarre new villains—like the Mad Nanny, Santa Claus, the Angry Red Herring, the furniture army of the Ottoman Empire, Venus and Milo, and the Swiss—as well as facing a few old ones, like the evil flower, El Seed. And his adventures are as silly as ever. In “Armless But Not Harmless,” one of my all-time favorite episodes, The Tick and Arthur find themselves facing the long arm of the law—without arms. In “Coach Fussell’s Lament,” The Tick is turned into a tiny two-headed bird that only speaks high school French—and he’s about to be sold to the highest evil bidder. And in “Ants in Pants!” a debilitating fear of ants causes The Tick to check himself into a superhero sanitarium. In this season, he’s abducted by aliens, he appears on reality TV, and he travels at the speed of lint.

Like season one, the second season features the same brilliantly goofy one-liners and a plethora of bad puns—as well as insights like, “You can’t fight evil with a macaroni duck!” And each episode ends with some random philosophical moral, straight from the somewhat scrambled mind of The Tick.

Also like season one, this two-disc set is missing one of the season’s episodes—and there aren’t any special features. But that doesn’t mean it’s not worth picking up. Because the second season is wackier and even funnier than the first. If you’re a fan of the ‘90s cartoon, this one’s a no-brainer. Strap on your moth wings and fly right out to pick up a copy. If you missed the show when it was on the air, though, be warned that it takes a special kind of viewer. But if you’ve ever been told that you have a weird sense of humor, you’re sure to love The Tick—because it doesn’t get much weirder than this.

Every episode is full of brilliantly ridiculous humor that’s every bit as smart as it is silly. And since each one is a mere 21 minutes long (even shorter if you skip the opening sequence with that impossibly catchy theme song), it’s just the thing to pop into your DVD player when you need a quick laugh.
