Back Flipping Forward is low-frills, big-talent rock and roll that packs a good strong punch. Dailey has a remarkable vocal range and a charismatic style capable of delivering an amazing diversity of sound. And the musicianship is stellar.
Initially when I heard the first couple of lines from the opening track, (the lyrics start out with “I’ve got a broken heart…”) I rolled my eyes and sighed, picturing the endless lamentations that I was certain would be forthcoming. Much to my surprise, I soon realized that I had it all wrong. In fact, this woeful intro entitled “Boom Boom” managed to turn into one of the catchiest ballads I’ve heard in a good long time. The energy level picks up with the next tune. “Grand Opening” is danceable with great vocal harmonies and some excellent guitar work. “Hollywood Hills” is phenomenal with an insanely catchy beat and sweet jazz undertones that set it apart from the previous songs. There is some delicious clarinet work featured here and it mixes beautifully with the vocals. “Eliza” is a soft ballad with more gorgeous harmonies. “Undone” is more upbeat with bluesy undertones. “Good to Me” is catchy (despite the less-than-energetic beat) and features some delightful harp work.
Nearly every song here is memorable. This is a good, solid debut from a promising artist, and I’m really looking forward to Dailey’s next album.
