Ever since Lucifer was tossed out of heaven centuries ago, he’s been trying to get even with God. He’s especially angry because God loves humans more than He loves His angels—something mere mortals don’t deserve, in his opinion. Lucifer has been building an army to rid the world of the human race for good—and to prove that God isn’t perfect. And since the archangel Michael was angry with the way that God dealt with the situation involving Lucifer’s fall from heaven, Lucifer plans to enlist his help in getting the war started, along with a few other nasty little demons who are already under his command.
Police officer Vincent saw his partner change into demon form right in front of him—and he had no choice but to shoot and kill his partner. Traumatized by the event, he takes a leave of absence, and, in that time, he learns that he’s a descendant of St. Peter—and he’s supposed to lead the children of God in a battle against Lucifer to save the world.
As the time draws near, mild-mannered Vincent begins to doubt his ability to fight, let alone win, a battle against Lucifer and an army of blood-thirsty demons. But he doesn’t stand alone. His friends and a priest from the Vatican will be with him until the end.
In the Beginning is brutal and bloody. Ms. Santiago pulls no punches when it comes to language and violence in this self-published novel. The storyline is controversial but entertaining, and although I didn’t find it very realistic that the archangel Michael would sympathize with the devil and turn on God, I have to agree that it makes for an interesting plot scenario.
Though it had a few rough spots that could have been smoothed out by a good editor, In the Beginning is still written well enough that its flaws won’t get on your nerves. In fact, it’s one of the few self-published novels that are worth picking up and spending your time reading. It comes at you full-tilt, filled with exhilaration and over-the-top imagination.
If you’re not a picky reader, and you’re willing to overlook a few flaws to find the entertainment value in an imaginative story, pick up a copy of In the Beginning and enjoy.
