Now That’s What I Call Country contains twenty chart-topping country hits from some of today’s brightest rising stars, such as Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood. You also get music from artists that have been around a bit longer, like George Strait and Gary Allan (my personal favorite). Other names you’ll recognize include Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, Sara Evans, and Kenny Chesney.
Usually, with a compilation, you get a bunch of mediocre songs from your favorite musicians—but not this time. All of the tracks have at least broken into the top ten on the country charts.
County music has always been about life and love, and Now That’s What I Call Country covers all aspects of both, from sad to upbeat and inspirational. And I promise the twang is kept to a minimum—after all, this isn’t your parents’ country music. Well…I’ll admit that Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland does sound extremely countrified—but, other than that, you’re good.
Reba McEntire and Kelly Clarkson sing about spouse abuse in a duet called “Because of You.” Taylor Swift appeals to the teenage audience with her song, “Picture to Burn,” about a girl telling her boyfriend all the things she hates about him after he breaks up with her. In “Letter to Me,” Brad Paisley wishes he could write a letter to himself and send it back in time to his teen years—to let the young, confused boy know that everything turns out all right. And Trace Adkins hits home with me when he sings about the different stages of life—and how you’ll later miss each one—in “You’re Gonna Miss This.” He cautions about wishing time would hurry up and move forward—something I did (and still do) far too often.
I even enjoyed songs from artists that I don’t particularly like—such as Rascal Flatts singing about loving someone who doesn’t feel the same in “Winner at a Losing Game.” Every time it plays, I find myself singing along.
There are so many great songs on this CD that I want to tell you about each one, but my space is limited, so I’ll refrain from covering the others.
If you’re new to country music, and you aren’t sure what’s good, pick up a copy of Now That’s What I Call Country. This CD is the best way to introduce you to the country music genre—because these artists are some of the best in the industry. And if you’ve listened to country music for years like I have, you’ll absolutely love this diverse collection of musicians and songs. I plan on popping it into my CD player often.
