Rod Stewart has been around since the 1960s, and though I’m not really a huge fan, I still like some of his music, because he has a unique voice and his songs are filled with impassioned and meaningful lyrics. In fact, I’m listening to him on satellite radio as I write this review (“Rhythm of My Heart”). So I just couldn’t pass up this three-disc deluxe edition of The Definitive Rod Stewart, which includes previously unreleased tracks, as well as rare and never-before-seen videos.
The Definitive Rod Stewart is available in two versions: a standard two-disc edition and a deluxe edition that includes a bonus DVD of music videos, which is what I’ll be reviewing here. Warner Brothers is currently launching an extensive reissue campaign of Rod Stewart’s epic catalog, with The Definitive Rod Stewart covering material recorded between 1971 and 2004.
Disc one includes fifteen tracks from his earlier music. Among my favorites from that era (1970s) are “Maggie Mae,” “The First Cut is the Deepest,” and “You’re in My Heart.” Other notable tracks include “The Killing of Georgie, Parts 1 & 2,” “Stay with Me” (from his time with the band The Faces), and “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy.”
Disc two contains sixteen tracks that are more from my time (the ‘80s and
early ‘90s). So, of course, it’s the disc that I listen to most. My favorites include “Some Guys Have All the Luck,” “Forever Young,” “Downtown Train,” “This Old Heart of Mine,” and “Rhythm of My Heart.”
The DVD contains fourteen music videos, most of which I hadn’t seen on MTV or other video music channels—maybe because many are rare and never-before-seen videos. These videos are described as Rod’s most beloved songs, but it only contains two of the videos that I enjoyed the most: “The First Cut is the Deepest” and “You’re in My Heart.”
The Definitive Rod Stewart is chock full of Mr. Stewart’s music. It even contains tracks that I hadn’t even heard of. So if you’re a big fan of this raspy-voiced singer, you’re not going to want to miss this collection. My ex-husband is one of those fans, and he found this lineup of music, all in one collection, to be a prized find—and that sums it up nicely. Nowhere else can you find such an extensive catalog of Rod Stewart songs, and you’re sure to find the songs you love the most. Get your copy before it’s gone.
