If you’re a fan of the Comedy Central Roasts series for celebrities, then you’ll probably recognize Greg Giraldo from the brazen quips that he regularly delivers on the show. Now, Giraldo puts himself fully in the spotlight with his own Comedy Central stand-up special, Midlife Vices.

In this special, Giraldo offers his audience a barrage of jokes—most of which center on his opinions—conversing plainly and openly about topics such as childhood obesity, women, race, and more. Occasionally, he also focuses on more personal experiences (including his divorce) and his attempts to find the humor in them.

While the material of the show is humorous overall, it’s plain to see that Giraldo’s delivery is wrapped in a jaded and angry package. He can come across as harsh at times, and his jokes fall under a very adult brand of humor. In fact, his style is similar to that of Bob Saget’s stand-up (Full House fans be warned—he’s far from the Danny Tanner alter ego).

That said, those who enjoy irate and gritty humor will adore all of the raw comedy that Giraldo has to offer. You’ll gasp and laugh at his shocking commentary. Those who balk at the slightest non-politically correct comment, however, should brace themselves for some shock and surprise.

As far as the DVD extras go, they’re okay. The only extra portion on the DVD includes a pilot episode for a 2007 TV show, called Adult Content with Greg Giraldo, which Giraldo was planning to host. For the most part, it focuses on sex, but it does have a dash of Greg’s comedy mixed in between the random commentary from guests. Again, adult humor fans will rejoice, but others may walk away scratching their heads.

Still, as far as extras are concerned, though, at least there’s some real meat to this one, which is more than can be said for some of the extras provided on other Comedy Central DVDs.

Overall, Giraldo provides some coarse laughs for those who enjoy cynical and uninhibited comedy. For the curious or the comically adventurous, Midlife Vices is at least worth a rental to try something new.
