After ploughing through a country church in Piney Mountain, North Carolina, recording star Reece Flynn nearly dies. It takes him six months to recover, but that doesn’t hold much sway with the judge. Reece is fined sixty thousand dollars and ordered to do community service. To make matters worse, he has to do his service in Dillard County, helping to rebuild the section of the church he destroyed.
Busy with school starting, homecoming approaching, and repairs to the church, Molly Harmon doesn’t have time to babysit some degenerate. She’s surprised when it turns out to be Reese Flynn, the man she stabilized until the paramedics arrived. Though she’s attracted to him, she has no intention of pursuing it further—but Reece turns out to be too charming and too good-looking for her to resist for long.
Reece has been floating through life playing music and looking for his roots. The search for his birth parents leads him somewhere he never expected. But Molly teaches him that sometimes you have to grow your own roots. Could those roots take hold in Dillard County with the preacher’s daughter?
The Homecoming of Reece Flynn is one of the most delightful inspirational romances I’ve read in a long time. I like a feel-good read without too much mushiness, and Ms. Mitchell has found the perfect balance.
Sure, this short story could have been turned into a longer novel, especially when it comes to Reece’s search for his birth parents (which turned out to be quite a shocking revelation), but I was still thoroughly satisfied with the ending. I read the last page with a smile, and that’s always a good way to end a book.
Set in a charming little country church, with wonderful characters who have a great sense of humor and a real love of life (and their fellow man), The Homecoming of Reece Flynn is the perfect Sunday afternoon read. The sweet, uncomplicated story is just the thing to help you take your mind off the outside world for a while. It will also help restore your faith in good people—and that alone makes it worth your time.
