If you’re expecting a bunch of Madonna songs on The Power of Madonna, you will be disappointed as much as I was. There are only seven tracks—two of which I’d never heard of. Plus, even though these young performers are talented, they still can’t quite pull off Madonna—maybe because Madonna is just too unique to imitate.
The Power of Madonna includes top hits like “Vogue,” which is the best performed song on the CD, mainly because they didn’t try to add too much over-the-top spunk to it. Another hit, ”Like a Virgin,” was a single that came out when I was in high school, and my mother promised to take a hammer to if I ever brought the album home from the store. I didn’t like this version of the song as much, because the lead singer tried to spice it up and only ended up making it sound squeaky—also, it was a little disconcerting to hear male vocals on this one.
Other songs include fairly decent performances of “Express Yourself” and “Like a Prayer.” Since the Glee Club didn’t change the sound too much, these songs are still a pleasure to listen to. Since I’ve never heard Madonna perform “4 Minutes” and “What It Feels Like For a Girl,” I can’t form an opinion on Glee’s cover of them, except to say the songs are okay, and I might have liked them with Madonna’s vocals.
All in all, The Power of Madonna isn’t a bad listening experience, but I might have enjoyed the songs more if I’d seen them performed live by the Glee Club. However, if I want to listen to Madonna’s music, I think I’ll stick with the original performer.
