Luke Bryan is fairly new to the country music scene, but his all-male country boy voice is kicking female hearts up a notch and drawing in the honky-tonk crowds and getting them out on the dance floors. You can’t listen to Tailgates & Tanlines without wanting to get up and dance, or at least tap your toes.
“Country Girl (Shake it for Me)” is the kind of song that I usually roll my eyes at, because it’s such a male song, but I found myself singing along to the catchy tune and dancing in my seat. One of my favorite tunes is “Tailgate Blues.” If you’ve never sat out on the tailgate of your truck in the black of the night, listening to the crickets, with a Dixie cup next to you, searching your soul, then you’ve never had the tailgate blues.
Another favorite is “You Don’t Know Jack,” a touching song about a homeless man addicted to Jack Daniels after losing everything. The song definitely makes you stop and see things from a homeless person’s point of view.
Several tracks on Tailgates & Tanlines are bittersweet songs about memories of long lost loves, like “Too Damn Young” and “Faded Away.” They’ll bring to mind your own past loves—at least those you still have fond memories of.
And no country CD would be complete without a haunting tune like “Muckalee Creek Water” about a man who gets away from it all by disappearing deep along the Muckalee Creek, where he kicks back with the copperheads, wild pigs, ‘gators, and his moonshine stash while sitting on a tractor tire around a campfire.
Rarely do I like every song on a CD, but Luke Bryan’s Tailgates & Tanlines is one of the few exceptions. I enjoyed every song and could listen to them over and over. With a sound that’s fresh, energetic, and full of life, it’s definitely a CD that’ll be stuck in your player for a long, long time.
