With the kids back in school and Halloween just around the corner, everyone’s getting in the Halloween spirit—even Mickey Mouse and his friends. So if your little ones are already getting excited about picking out a costume, carving a pumpkin, and trick-or-treating, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Mickey’s Monster Musical is sure to become a fall favorite.
This spooky, Halloween-themed adventure begins when Mickey, Minnie, and Pluto head out for a picnic, only to end up stranded in the dark, scary forest when their toon car breaks down. Fortunately, there’s a castle nearby, and the castle’s owner, Count Mickula, is happy to help them out. So while Dr. Von Drakenstein fixes the car, the Count and his new friends try to figure out what’s making the strange clanging noise in his castle—with a little help from Mickula’s good friend, Boodles, and his Monster Mouseketools, of course. Is the castle haunted, or is someone just playing tricks on them?
Filled with ghosts and ghouls and things that go bump in the night, Mickey’s Monster Musical sounds like it might be too scary for younger kids. After all, in this creepy old castle, Mickey’s alter ego is a vampire (who likes to drink lots of grape juice), Goofy is Frankenstein’s monster, Donald and Daisy are ghosts, and Pete is a werewolf. But despite its eerie setting and its creepy characters, the fun musical numbers and familiar faces keep it from crossing the line between lovably spooky and nightmarishly scary. Even my three-year-old—who’s afraid of monsters and is quick to let me know if something is too scary for her to watch—happily watches it over and over, apparently unfazed by the monsters who look like her favorite Disney characters.
Meanwhile, as Mickey and his friends venture off to solve the mystery in Count Mickula’s castle, young viewers do more than just meet lovable monsters and sing and dance along with the catchy Halloween songs. They’ll also learn a thing or two along the way. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse is a fun and educational series—and this full-length special is no different. Kids will love helping Mickey choose the Monster Mouseketools that will help the characters solve their problems and find the source of the castle’s mysterious noises.
If you’re looking for a Halloween treat that won’t give preschoolers nightmares, Mickey’s Monster Musical is a pretty safe choice. It’s creepy but cute—and it’s sure to have your kids singing, dancing, and problem-solving right along with Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, and their ghoulish new friends.
DVD Review:
The DVD release of Mickey’s Monster Musical comes complete with a trick-or-treat bag—which, while small, is just the right size for the littlest trick-or-treaters. If your little one is particularly curious, however—and prone to, say, trying to pull it down over her head—it won’t last long, so you might want to hide it away until Halloween.
On the disc, meanwhile, you’ll find two additional Mickey Mouse Clubhouse episodes—a pirate-themed adventure with Goofy’s grandpappy, Captain Goof-Beard, and a fun farm episode—along with a Halloween-themed episode of Minnie’s Bow-Toons. So once your kids are finished watching Mickey’s Monster Musical,. there’s still much more here to enjoy.
