These days, it seems as though the “it” supernatural beings are zombies. They make regular appearances in popular books and movies and TV series. But the video game-inspired horror comedy Werewolves Within shifts its focus to one of the more underused and underappreciated supernatural monsters.

Werewolves Within moves to the quaint town of Beaverfield with timid forest ranger Finn (Sam Richardson). The town is currently in the middle of a battle over a proposed pipeline, and the quirky residents are divided between those who have already spent the money that’s sure to start rolling in and those who are more concerned for the environment. But some of the residents of Beaverfield discover that they have something much bigger to worry about when a winter storm cuts them off from the town, the generators are all destroyed, and animals and people alike come under attack.

When it becomes clear that someone—or something—is terrorizing the area around the Beaverfield Inn, Finn and the rest of the town’s misfits gather together to team up to keep each other safe. But when their plan doesn’t work—when more of them come under attack and they realize that one of them might be to blame—they all start to turn on each other, coming up with motives and accusations for each remaining person.

The town is definitely filled with eccentric characters—from day-drinking Mr. Parker (Wayne Duvall), who’s trying to convince the hold-outs to vote in favor of the pipeline, to chatty postal carrier Cecily (Milana Vayntrub), who seems to know every last detail about each one of her neighbors. Sweet, thoughtful Ranger Finn is completely out of his league with this band of armed and crazy residents, but he’s still determined to find the culprit—whether human or not—and keep his strange new neighbors safe.

The quirky characters certainly add to the outlandish tone of the film to make it a sometimes gory but always fun-filled horror comedy. It isn’t completely, wildly, hilariously over the top, but it’s still consistently funny. And when the characters start going after each other, the film builds into an entertaining supernatural free-for-all.

Whether you’re a fan of the video game that inspired Werewolves Within or you just love a healthy dose of humor mixed in with your horror, this supernatural thriller is worth a look. It’s a wild and wolfy thriller about fear, greed, and suspicion among some truly wacky neighbors.
