Just a few months ago, Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem starred as Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, offering a look at one significant week for the couple in Aaron Sorkin’s Oscar nominated biopic Being the Ricardos. Now, director Amy Poehler offers a closer, real-life look in her documentary Lucy and Desi.

Lucy and Desi takes viewers behind the scenes with this classic Hollywood power couple. Told by some of the people who knew their story best—their kids, their friends, and even Lucy and Desi themselves, thanks to Lucy’s collection of old recordings—it explores the story of two people from very different backgrounds but very similar values who both stumbled into show business and into one another’s hearts. And in an attempt to bring their busy careers together, they created America’s most popular television show, only to have their work slowly tear them apart.

From their youth and early struggles to their work together, their family life, and beyond, Lucy and Desi tells a beautiful but heartbreaking real-life story of fame, celebrity, and true love. Lucy and Desi were both groundbreaking artists in their own way—she a strong, funny character in an industry of passive housewives and he a singing, dancing Cuban in an industry with so few Hispanic stars. They shared a similar passion and drive—as well as a past filled with pain and loss and a strong responsibility for their families.

If you’ve seen Being the Ricardos, some of the topics here will come as no surprise, since there’s quite a bit of overlap. But Lucy and Desi gives even more depth to this legendary twosome, offering more background on the couple, their families, and their relationship. Interviews with friends give viewers a new perspective on these two artists and the challenges they faced in both show business and their lives together. And daughter Lucie Arnaz Luckinbill opens up about her parents’ love story—from her childhood until their deaths, tying it all together in a way that will be satisfying for fans: with an almost-perfect Hollywood ending.

For fans of these two performers and their ground-breaking sitcom, Lucy and Desi offers an entertaining—and moving—look at their lives and their love story. You won’t find a whole lot of shocking revelations here, but it has the same heart and humor that you’d expect from a movie about this legendary duo.

Amy Poehler’s Lucy and Desi begins streaming on Amazon Prime Video on March 4, 2022.
