Many of us have things in our past that we’d rather not revisit: maybe a difficult time in our lives or a traumatic event. But in the Netflix sci-fi adventure The Adam Project, one man is forced to confront the most difficult time in his life while also attempting to safe the future.

The Adam Project races through time with Adam Reed (Ryan Reynolds), a pilot from the year 2050. After he steals a ship and sets out for the past, desperate to figure out how to make things right for his own timeline, he accidentally ends up in the wrong time. He comes face-to-face with his 12-year-old self (Walker Scobell), who’s still struggling to come to terms with the sudden death of his father, just over a year ago. And, together, they travel farther into the past to find their dad (Mark Ruffalo) and get his help.

As these two versions of Adam hurry to fix the future, they face a variety of challenges. This isn’t the same old sci-fi adventure through time. Sure, it’s got plenty of time travel action, but there’s more to this story than just the story of a guy trying to undo the damage that’s been done in the future. It’s also a family drama about the pain of loss—how grief can bring people together or tear them apart. And, since Ryan Reynolds is involved, you can expect plenty of humor, too.

If you’ve ever argued with your child, only to realize that you’re fighting with a younger version of yourself, you’ll understand a lot of the banter that plays throughout the movie. Ryan Reynolds has definitely met his match in Walker Scobell, who has no problem keeping up with the older star’s sarcastic wit. Younger Adam is still acting out in his grief, while Older Adam is bitter and resentful, and they tend to take it out on each other. The two bicker and criticize and psychoanalyze each other, which causes endless frustration for both of them. But, eventually, they take a break from all of the bickering and start working together. And it all comes together in a way that seems reminiscent of the classic family-friendly action movies of the ‘80s, thanks to its mix of sci-fi action, comedy, and family drama.

The Adam Project definitely has a little bit of something for everyone. For older kids, it’s a fun time-travel adventure with a kid joining in the action. For parents, it offers humor and drama and a little bit of nostalgia for those favorite old movies. And that makes it a good pick for family movie night.

The Adam Project debuts on Netflix on March 11, 2022.
