It’s not all that hard to see that the climate of our world is changing—just ask a farmer…or the owner of a struggling ski resort. Things just aren’t what they used to be. And Disneynature’s latest Earth Day release, Polar Bear joins a bear’s quest to adjust in order to survive.

Polar Bear follows a young female polar bear as she tries to navigate her ever-changing environment. Her story begins as a cub, as she and her twin brother play together in their icy surroundings as their strong, protective mother hunts for their food and teaches them how to survive in the wilderness. It continues to follow her for years, first as she learns from her mother and later as she ventures out on her own before having a cub of her own and stepping into the nurturing role that her mother once played for her.

As the film follows this bear from childhood through motherhood, it shows how her life changes from season to season, year to year, stage to stage. It follows her through rough-and-tumble playful years as cub, through her lessons in hunting, through her solitary time, and finally caring for her own cub. It’s a moving story, made grand and dramatic by the kind of stunning cinematography and dramatic score that viewers have come to expect from Disneynature films.

Throughout the film, the environmental message comes through loud and clear: the planet is changing, and it’s causing problems for the polar bears. Sea ice is breaking apart and melting, which means that seals—the bears’ main food source—aren’t as plentiful as they once were. Winters can be extremely harsh, and summers are getting hotter and muddier. Some of the effects are obvious—and that adds some heartbreaking drama to the story.

Still, it’s not all doom and gloom—because despite the challenges that the changes bring for this young bear and her family, they find ways to survive. They learn and adapt. Of course, at times, their adventures can get a little graphic—mostly where mealtimes are concerned—but the film generally remains family-friendly, exploring the challenges of life on the ice without going into too much detail.

Beautifully filmed with a story that’s just as moving as its grand, cinematic score, Polar Bear is a nature film that the whole family can appreciate. It’s a great way to commemorate Earth Day—especially when paired with some other Earth-friendly activities.

Polar Bear arrives on Disney+ on April 22, 2022.
