No matter how well we may think we know someone, people often have a way of surprising us. In The Second Husband, the latest thriller by Kate White, one woman races to uncover the truth about the man she loves—and the man who came before him.

The story finds Emma Hawke racing to uncover the truth about her beloved new husband, Tom. Just over two years ago, Emma’s first husband, Derrick, was murdered in the city during a weekend work conference. While it was definitely a shock, though, Emma struggled to mourn her husband when she’d been planning to leave him. Shortly after his death, she began working with Tom’s company, and their relationship blossomed quickly—and unexpectedly. But when Derrick’s case is reopened—and Emma learns more about her new husband—she begins to question whether their relationship was as coincidental as it once seemed.

As a persistent new detective picks up the investigation into Derrick’s unsolved murder, she makes Emma start to rethink everything. Emma fears that the detective sees through her—that she realizes that Emma wasn’t as heartbroken by Derrick’s death as she should have been and that Emma herself is now under investigation. At the same time, new information comes out—information not just about Derrick but also about Tom—and it seems as though someone is trying to send her a message through cryptic notes that appear in her office and on her car.

The psychological suspense builds as Emma begins digging for more information. The more she digs, the more she discovers holes in her husband’s story. Her fairy tale romance seems as though it could be just that: a fairy tale. And she begins to fear that she might not be safe—even in her own home, with the man she loves.

This is definitely the kind of thriller that will make readers question everything. Everyone here seems a little bit cagey—a little bit suspicious. The only one who’s obviously innocent is Emma, but her feelings about her late husband lead her into a downward spiral of guilt and suspicion. And though not all of the pieces of the puzzle fit perfectly in the end, it definitely makes for a gripping read.

With its constantly building threats and suspicions, The Second Husband is a great pick for a summer poolside thriller. It isn’t a demanding read, but it’s sure to keep you on edge as this conflicted character uncovers some unpleasant truths.
