Summer tends to be a time for superheroes and colorful animated adventures—crowd-pleasing movies to bring in the summer break audiences. But if you’re a movie lover who’s just biding your time until the scares of October, you’re probably searching out movies like the indie slasher flick Final Caller.

Final Caller goes on the air with nighttime talk show host Roland Bennett (Douglas Epps), who’s known for his abrasive treatment of the strange people who call in. When he starts taking calls for the night, he’s not really surprised by the stories about creepy neighbors and daughters searching for Bigfoot. But he’s not expecting a caller who introduces himself as The Outsider (Jack McCord), who vows to kill eight women unless Roland stops him. And as The Outsider continues to call, it becomes clear that he’s not just another one of Roland’s crazy callers.

As Roland and his producers (and also, inexplicably, his soon-to-be-ex-wife) try to figure out what to do about this bloodthirsty caller, The Outsider continues to kill women, one by one, in the goriest of ways—but not before giving a long, rambling speech about everything that’s wrong with the world (and, specifically, women) today.

While the idea behind this film is actually pretty intriguing, the execution is an unintentionally hilarious mix of bloody disgusting and laughably over-the-top. Everything about this movie screams “low budget”—from the acting to the effects. But, admittedly, for some viewers, that will be a big part of its appeal.

The characters here are completely overplayed. Roland isn’t just obnoxious on the air; he’s an all-around terrible human being, screaming at everyone around him—from his wife to his producers to the janitor. The killer is a self-important, blood-soaked bore, preaching to the women he kills. And, together, these two opinionated characters set the stage for all-out insanity as the story gets crazier and the action gets bloodier.

If you like the kind of scary movies that hit your local theater each October, you’ll most likely find this one to be shockingly insane—so far beyond the typical studio slasher flick that you’re used to. But if you love low-budget indie thrillers—the bloodier, the crazier, the more over-the-top the better—then this one will draw you in with its unhinged action and drama.

Final Caller is a slasher flick that only the most diehard horror fans will appreciate. If you’ve got a dark sense of humor and a love of spurting fake blood, though, this one’s for you. If not, just rewatch Friday the 13th instead.

If you’re in the mood for blood and gore, you can find Final Caller on digital and DVD starting July 5, 2022.
