Most of us have some crazy stories from our past—of unforgettable adventures with old friends. But while many of us have grown up and moved on, some are still living out the good old days. And in Netflix’s Me Time, a responsible dad sets out to relive that wild past with his old friend.

Me Time stars Kevin Hart as super dad Sonny Fisher. While his architect wife, Maya (Regina Hall), works with high-profile clients, Sonny does it all. He manages the household, runs the PTA, and makes vitamin-rich smoothies for breakfast—but he never takes time for himself. When his childhood best friend, Huck (Mark Wahlberg), calls to invite him to his annual week-long birthday celebration, Maya decides that it’s time for Sonny to have time off. So she takes the kids to visit her parents for spring break, leaving Sonny to his wild week with his old friend.

While Sonny is expecting his time with Huck and his much-younger friends to be a week of extravagance at some fancy resort, he ends up boarding a custom bus into the desert, where Huck has set up a Coachella-style camp in the wilderness. Sonny isn’t thrilled about foraging for his food, and it isn’t long before things go horribly wrong, kicking off a series of wild and crazy misadventures.

What plays out is definitely reminiscent of buddy road trip comedies like The Hangover—though it isn’t nearly as shockingly outrageous. Sonny and Huck end up on the run, resorting to some childish pranks to send a message to one of Maya’s clients, who’s a little too affectionate. There are plenty of over-the-top moments and some laugh-out-loud comedy, too—but if you’ve seen the trailer, you’ve already seen the best moments. The rest feels like it was written by a 12-year-old boy with a deep and unrelenting passion for awkward jokes revolving around body parts and their functions.

To add to the madness of it all, the story is random and rambling, with no real direction. There’s not much of a point to any of it—and then, in the end, it tries to cram in some valuable life lessons that have little to do with the rest of the story. It’s bizarre and perplexing, and it all just feels like a waste of perfectly good talent.

Together, Kevin Hart and Mark Wahlberg seem like they could make a pretty hilarious buddy comedy. After all, they’ve both done it in the past. But these two funny guys can’t make up for this film’s random, awkward storyline and sophomoric humor.

You can have your best buddy over to watch Me Time on Netflix starting on August 26, 2022.
