It doesn’t really matter how you feel about his politics; there’s just something wonderfully entertaining about lovably meme-worthy Senator Bernie Sanders. And in Feel the Bern, the first (completely fictional) Bernie Sanders Mystery by author Andrew Shaffer, all of the Senator’s quirks come out while he and his intern set out to find a killer.

The story travels home to the small town of Eagle Creek, Vermont, with political intern Crash Robertson, who’s been tasked with keeping her boss, Senator Bernie Sanders, on schedule while he’s in town for the annual Champ Days festivities. Crash has been warned that Bernie has a tendency to wander off, so she knows that she’ll have to keep a close eye on him if she wants to keep her job. But when Crash discovers the body of a local banker in Lake Champlain, she and Bernie end up on a new and unexpected adventure.

As the Champ Days festivities continue, nothing goes as Crash planned. Not only did she begin the weekend by losing her boss—and discovering a dead body while she was out searching for him—but all of Bernie’s weekend appearances are upstaged by some other event. It’s one mishap after another, which just adds to the story’s general chaos. This may seem like just another cozy mystery—with a couple of amateur sleuths snooping around in search of a small-town killer—but it has so much more personality, from its unmistakable Vermont vibe to its famous sleuth.

Though Eagle Creek has its share of lovably eccentric small town characters, they all pale in comparison to the Senator turned amateur sleuth. The Bernie in this quirky cozy mystery is just as you’d imagine him to be: a mitten-wearing, Subaru-driving, lovable old politician who’s a little bit Brooklyn and a little bit Vermont—and full of wacky surprises. He may look a little curmudgeonly, but he’s a clever guy. He’s eager to share his views on politics, the environment, and the dangers of big business with anyone who will listen (even if they’re just being polite). And when an old friend ends up a suspect in the murder, he’s determined to uncover the truth to clear his friend’s name. He’s just a lovable character—and, together with his anxious young intern, he makes this a wacky adventure that you won’t want to put down.

Loaded with endearing characters and small-town misadventures, Feel the Bern has a whole lot more personality than the typical cozy mystery. It’s just a whole lot of mapley, murdery, Bernie Sanders-y fun—the kind that will keep you chuckling as you picture the straight-faced Senator taking on a would-be maple millionaire while investigating a murder. And when you finish, you’ll be one again asking the author for another installment.
