In 2021’s Stars Fell on Alabama, a successful Hollywood agent fell in love with his client when she agreed to join him at his high school reunion. In the sequel, Stars Fell Again, their relationship takes another twist when they travel to visit her family for the holidays.

Stars Fell Again finds Bryce (James Maslow) and Madison (Ciara Hanna) meeting up in Oregon for Christmas with her family. Bryce was planning to propose—but when they arrive at Madison’s parents’ house, they find themselves in the middle of a celebration. Madison’s sister, Harper (Ali Faulkner), has gotten engaged to her long-distance boyfriend and is planning a wedding in two days. But while the whole family gets caught up in wedding planning—and Harper tries to understand her sudden feelings for her best friend, Josh (Drew Moerlein)—Bryce’s proposal plans keep getting spoiled.

With family and friends and random work associates racing into town to help out, Harper tries to put together an incredibly elaborate wedding in just 48 hours. Even as they run into one problem after another, they still manage to book a winery at the last minute and choreograph a rumba for the bride and groom’s first dance. The wedding scramble definitely makes for all kinds of craziness—as does the bride’s sudden (and completely understandable) case of cold feet. But it’s all made even more over-the-top by things like an axe-throwing bachelor/bachelorette party and a scene where Madison and Bryce bicker about the direction of their relationship while tap dancing.

While the original story was filled with its own melodrama and misunderstandings, the sequel definitely kicks it all up a notch. It’s wacky and overdone, with a whole lot of questionable performances. And though Bryce and Madison and their continuing love story are supposed to be the focus, they often get lost in everyone else’s drama. It definitely has all of the mix-ups and missed opportunities of the typical rom-com—along with a couple of love stories and a perfectly predictable story. But it’s generally more cheesy and chaotic than charming.

This time of year isn’t exactly known for the best new movies—and Stars Fell Again fits right in with the usual brainless, forgettable fare. So instead of watching this messy rom-com, you might want to catch up on some of the movies you missed during Award Season instead.

Stars Fell Again falls into select theaters on February 3, 2023.
