E-Author Spotlight: Kat Henry Doran

Read Time:2 Minute, 36 Second

I love it when an author’s voice captivates me and makes me crave more. Kat Henry Doran has a voice all her own, with an incredible talent for bringing her characters to life through dialogue and ordinary experiences with a unique slant.

Second in the line of six kids (three girls and three boys), Kat Henry Doran grew up in central New York, south of Syracuse, in ski country, where she spent a great deal of time outdoors with a book on her lap. She recalls an occasion when she decided to run away from home; she packed a bag of her favorite books because she knew she’d always have them for company.

Her hidden talent lies in creating tote bags (visit KatsKarryAlls.blogspot.com) and other items for new parents and infants. Lately, she’s branched out into doll clothes and stuffed animals for her grandchildren.

Ms. Doran collects items from two separate disciplines: pictures of mothers and children and pottery crafted by Irish artisans. These are not the things you see in Irish import shops or in airports. This is the real deal, from small shops in out-of-the-way towns and craft fairs.

She listens to music before she starts a novel, but never while writing it. Her deceased father visits her in dreams to let her know how he’s doing. She’s really passionate about human rights abuses, especially women and children. And her favorite things are Meredith, Ashlin, Owen, and Kieran. She didn’t think she had that much love inside her, never thought she could care so much for anything or anyone like these four young people. As they grow and mature they become more dear to her.

On Writing, In Kat Henry Doran’s Own Words

What or who inspires you to write?

I am inspired by articles in the media, either electronic or print, particularly when they involve human rights abuses and the people who work to stop them.

Why did you begin writing?

I began writing by accident; something that was beyond my control.

Which author inspires you?

Samantha Powers (A Problem From Hell: America and the Age of Genocide) inspires me.

What do you find most rewarding about writing?

Teaching people something they didn’t know before.

Have you experienced writer’s block? And, if so, how did you cure it?

When writer’s block sets in, I go back to the beginning of the manuscript and re-read it. That usually works for me. If not, I take a nap.

When is your next book due out, and what’s it about?

My next book, Mad Dog and Archangel, is part of the Class of ‘85 series out of The Wild Rose Press. We don’t have a release date yet, but likely it will be late summer or early fall of 2011.
