Weezer

Weezer is back! But whatever you do, don’t refer to them as Emo Rock (geek rock). Their latest self-titled album has been soaring up the charts – which is a good thing for them after the commercial flop of Pinkerton.

The boys come back with a sound that many might remember from their first self-titled album. “Don’t Let Go” and “Photograph” are similar in sound to the smash hit songs “Undone The Sweater Song” and “Buddy Holly.” The first two songs on the new album are catchy and upbeat. That’s when the band throws a curve ball with the first track released for the radio, “Hash Pipe.”

“Hash Pipe” is a true rock song. The guitar tracks are heavy and distorted. The drums even pound out a hard-driving rhythm – something the band isn’t known for in mainstream radio. Weezer keeps it up when old happy songs connect with a heavier grit in the tracks “Crab” and “Knock Down Drag-out.”

The best track in my opinion is “Simple Pages.” The drums pound out a simple, driving rhythm while the guitar licks jump into the driver’s seat and take control of the song as the vocals become the Merlot of the song.

Weezer rocks plain and simple. They have taken the sound that many people grew to know and mixed it with an in-your-face rock that makes this CD a must-have in any music collection. Enjoy it – I have.
