11,000 Virgins: Music for the Feast of St. Ursula

Pure clear voices. Haunting, soothing medieval melodies. Authentic accompaniment.
This CD has them all. It’s a masterpiece among modern adaptations of medieval
music. Not that I’m a medieval music expert—I just know a good thing
when I hear it.

This music will transport you to the open, echoing acoustics of European cathedrals
and the meditative mood found there. Comprised mostly of sacred music composed by the early Christian mystic nun
Hildegard von Bingen, the CD takes you through a medieval worship service in
a heart-calmingly reflective way. The tones in these chants are similar but endlessly varied.

Anonymous 4 sings on the CD as though they were an entire choir. It’s
hard to believe that there are only four women singing—though, as appropriate
in this type of music, it’s also hard to separate out their individual
voices.

One need not be religious to listen to and appreciate this music, though you
will most likely appreciate it more if you are, especially if you’ve enjoyed
visiting cathedrals or monasteries. You may not like it if you’re into
metal and rap exclusively—this music is for those who want to sink into
quiet tones.
