Life Stories

Read Time:1 Minute, 38 Second

Players: 2-8

Playing time: It depends on how chatty you are—it could easily

last all night

I was at a slumber party at a friend’s house when our

hostess pulled out this game. I’ve never been one for party games, so I was

hesitant—especially since I really didn’t know the other people there. They were all

friends of my friend—people whom I’d only met in passing, if at all. We were all a

little hesitant, in fact, but we were assured that this was the most non-competitive,

non-threatening game we’d ever play—and in no time, we were all chatting and laughing as

if we’d known each other for years.

Life Stories, as the name suggests, is

a storytelling game. Players take turns rolling a die and moving around the board. For

each space, there’s a color-coordinated stack of cards, and each card asks a different

question—about family traditions, experiences in other cultures, favorite experiences,

favorite memories, and more. If you don’t want to answer the question, you can always

choose to go for an Alternatives card instead—but you may end up acting something out or

doing an impersonation or something equally embarrassing.

In Life

Stories, there are no losers—just a room full of winners. When each player reaches the

center of the board, there’s a celebration—in which the other players go around the

circle and tell a story or say something nice about the player who’s finishing the

game.

Life Stories is a great game for any group—families, friends, or

even distant acquaintances. It feels a bit silly at first, but before long, each

question—and each story—will spark other stories and other discussions. You’ll find that

you’re getting to know your fellow players better. And don’t be surprised if you end up

making a few new friends in the process.
