Notting Hill is one of the movies that I
never tire of watching. It’s charming, it’s witty, and, well, it’s Hugh Grant and Julia
Roberts. Need I say more?
Perhaps I will anyway…
Notting Hill is a romantic comedy about William Thacker (Grant),
an average Joe who owns a less-than-successful travel bookstore in London’s Notting Hill.
Thacker’s life is turned upside-down when American mega-star Anna Scott (Roberts) walks
into his store. Before he knows it, William’s trying to get past the paparazzi and PR
people so he can get closer to Anna. And while he knows that there’s not much of a
chance that a relationship between an American movie star and a British bookseller could
possibly work, William is willing to give it a shot—because no matter how hard he tries,
he can’t stop thinking about her.
Hugh Grant is enjoyably bumbling and
Julia Roberts is as captivating as ever in this film. And while Hugh earns his share of
chuckles due solely to his awkwardness, Spike (Rhys Ifans), William’s bizarre flatmate,
draws the serious guffaws. Add them together and throw in a sweet love story, and you’ll
find yourself laughing through your tears time and again.
Not only is
this a great chick flick, but guys like it, too (thanks, especially, to Spike). Even my
husband, who typically shies away from anything that looks like it could be a girly
movie, loves it. In fact, he even bought it for me so I could watch it
repeatedly.
DVD features include a number of amusing deleted scenes, a fun
“Movie Tips” featurette by Hugh Grant, and more.
