Majestic

India is the setting of a monastery for exiled Buddhist monks

from
Tibet.

Prayer, discipline, and tradition are the ways of the

Tibetan monks. But things aren’t easy for a modern monk; outside influences often

interfere with religious studies. This foreign film is about a group of young monks and

their new favorite ritual—soccer. They’ll do anything, including sneaking out of the

monastery and risking their futures, for a chance to see the World Cup finals. It takes

some convincing, but when they offer to study harder, their elders agree to let them rent

a television and satellite dish to watch the game at the monastery.

Of

course, there’s more to the film than just soccer. The monks chant and
sing, tell

jokes, and play around like regular boys. Viewers get a small glimpse
of what it might

be like to live in a monastery.

By the end of the 94 minutes it takes to

watch this film, I wanted to become a monk myself, just so I could belong to such a

wonderful group of people. Compassionate, unselfish, non-materialistic…where do I sign

up? The Cup is a feel-good movie that truly makes you feel good, and want to be

a better person. And any movie that can do that gets a thumbs up from me!
