Wake Up! You’re Probably Never Going to Look Like That

Read Time:2 Minute, 1 Second

We all want a quick fix to our problems, and weight control is no exception. After all, the media says it’s easy to lose weight, so it must be true. I know that if I buy that exercise contraption that I saw on TV and use it religiously for twenty minutes a day, just like they said, I’ll look exactly like the model in the infomercial.

Well, wake up! It’s going to take a lot more work to lose that weight and keep it off. You will be hungry, and, no, you still won’t look like a supermodel—unless, of course, you’ve been blessed with remarkable genes. That’s exactly what Michelle Pearl hammers into readers’ heads in her book, Wake Up! You’re Probably Never Going to Look Like That: How to be Happier, Healthier and Imperfectly Fit.

Pearl, who has lost over 100 pounds (twice!), is a certified group fitness instructor and the owner of ImperfectFitness.com, an online subscription exercise service. She convincingly debunks the myths that the media constantly feeds us—from the popular Biggest Loser to fad diets, miracle pills, and quick-fix exercise equipment.

She tells readers her story—how she lost and gained and lost the weight again—and details the daily routine that has enabled her to keep it off. She went from struggling to get into her size 26 clothes to a comfortable and fit size 10. Notice I didn’t say a size 2—that’s just not in her genes, even though she’s quite disciplined. If I followed her diet, on the other hand, I’d weigh under 100 pounds! And that’s what I especially like about her approach: she admits that weight loss is very personal and there is no “one size fits all” formula. To help readers find a method that works for them, she even provides a section on the weight loss success stories of seven other individuals, ages 30 to 52, who have managed to keep it off—so you can’t use age as an excuse.

Wake Up! You’re Probably Never Going to Look Like That: How to be Happier, Healthier and Imperfectly Fit is a concise, no-nonsense book, at just over 100 pages long. I recommend it for anyone who’s been fighting with weight loss and is serious about losing the weight and keeping it off.
