Get Closer

You don’t have to have been born in the South or on a dusty country road to sing country music—and Australian-born Keith Urban proves it. He doesn’t even wear a cowboy hat. He’s also another one of those music outlaws who don’t conform to a set of rules when writing and singing music, and that’s one of the reasons why I like his music so much. What counts the most for me is a country boy voice, whether the song rocks or sounds pure country. Keith Urban does that and more with his latest CD, Get Closer.

Urban is one of the best at expressing his feelings through music, and it comes out loud and clear in love songs like “All for You” and “Right Back to You”—slow melodies about how he can’t live without her or where he’d be without her love. And he also sings about how proud he is to show off the woman he loves in the song “Put You in a Song.”

Songs about family and life make up a lot of Get Closer. “Without You” assures the woman he loves that his music, traveling, and singing wouldn’t mean anything without his family, and that fast cars and guitars would always take second place to them. Then there is the song about staying up arguing all night and not going to bed angry in “Shut Out the Lights.”

My absolute favorite tune is “You Gonna Fly.” With its faster pace and sing-along verses about lifting a woman out of her broken life, urging her to start living no matter what’s come before, and assuring her that she’s gonna fly, you can’t help but feel lifted, too, even though it’s not necessarily an inspirational song.

When a new Keith Urban CD is released, I am confident that I’ll get some great music, so he’s always on my auto-buy list. As soon as it’s on the music store shelves or available online, I snatch it up. Get Closer didn’t disappoint, and, as always, Keith Urban is fantastic!
