The Dig, a Brooklyn, New York-based quartet, has released their second effort, Midnight Flowers. The band has garnered quite a reputation in the New York City area as a great live show, and Midnight Flowers is a hauntingly beautiful studio album.
There’s an ethereal feel to the music of The Dig, and listening to the CD was an out-of-this-world experience for me. The interplay of the music and vocals and the overall “vibe” carries listeners up into the clouds. Their music is a bit indie, a bit rock, with a touch of the Ramones—all adding up to a solid follow-up to their debut record, Electric Toys.
The music is not overpowering. It doesn’t hit you over the head with a shovel. Rather, it seduces you. It captures you. And, before you know it, you’ll be humming the lines to the songs.
I was immediately hooked by the opening song, “Red Rose in the Cold Winter Ground.” It has a John Lennon sound to it—a bit of “A Day in the Life” or “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.” And the third track, “I Already Forgot Everything You Said,” has some chilling lyrics that are the perfect words for the relationship you’ve gotten over:
When you think of all the things that I said to you
They wouldn’t cut to the bone if they weren’t true
You can keep ‘em locked away inside your head
But I already forgot everything you said
“All Tied Up” continues with that hypnotic sound, pulling you along to the point where you’ll eventually let go. It’s you who will be “all tied up”—in the sound and the feel of the music.
“Hole in My Heart” is an up-tempo rocker with a jubilant sound that’s contradictory to the lyrics, perfectly describing a place where some of us guys have been:
There’s a hole in my heart, she says it’s a friend
But I know in my heart she’s gonna do it again.
Men, you know what I’m talking about, don’t you? Why not blast this song and sing out loud and wash her away from your memory—at least for the playing time of this CD? Those past breakups don’t feel so bad after listening to The Dig’s Midnight Flowers.
This New Jersey guy is going to venture over to The Dig’s turf in Brooklyn to see firsthand what all the excitement is about. For the rest of our readers scattered all over the world, though, the CD is the next best thing.
