It’s a wonder if Nickelback has ever released a sub-standard CD. Their
first major label CD, The State, is an amazing romp through what rock
should be. Silver Side Up was their second major label release, full
of hits like “How You Remind Me,”“Too Bad,” and the soon
to be released “Never Again.” However, before these two works of art
were out on the market, there was the independently produced 1996 release of
Curb.
After some legal issues, Curb was re-released on Roadrunner Records,
which was a smart move by Nickelback. This CD is of a genuine quality not found
in many bands in today’s music market.
Although there have been no releases put on U.S. radio waves from this CD,
the songs are just phenomenal. The song “Detangler” is just one of
many. It begins with a light, fast paced guitar riff. Taps on the crash cymbal
follow every other beat, then before you know it, the song takes off. In the
middle of the song, there is a nice play between the rhythm and lead guitar.
The song “Just Four” is another superb song. This song was released
not only on Curb, but also on Silver Side Up. It’s an angry
song. The lyrics describe what would happen if a certain person was ever found.
This person obviously did harm to a female close to the lead singer. The emotion
is deep and profoundly heavy.
Although the version of the CD that I have purchased is the re-release of Curb,
I have also heard the indie release of it and the sound quality is the same
on both. ¡Bueno! It is amazing that such a talented band went unnoticed
for four plus years before getting a record deal. This CD is a tour de force
and should be a definite addition to anyone’s CD collection.
