Popular music seems to be spanning from rock radio stations to the pop radio stations. One song that can be heard on both of them is “The Middle” by Jimmy Eat World. This song is pretty good, but don’t be fooled by it. The rest of the CD is bland and lacks direction.
Jimmy Eat World, the current release by the band with the same name, has a few good songs on it. The first song “Bleed American” is one of those songs. It has that hard, dark feel to it. It pinpoints the American culture exactly.
“Your House” and “If You Don’t, Don’t” are some of the songs that really aren’t any good. They both sound the same. When I buy a CD, I want the songs to sound somewhat different.
“The Authority Song” is one that takes you back to the 80s New Wave movement. I was hoping that bands would leave this type of music behind, but I guess not. We all remember how crazy those songs drove us and where the New Wave sound went to — nowhere and fast.
The lead singer’s voice is enough to drive one to the brink of pulling the CD out a quarter of the way through. It is just one of those voices that sounds cool the first time you hear it, but by the fourth or fifth song, it just sucks. To top it off, “The Middle” is the third song, and it has been so over-played that I can’t see how anyone would like it anymore.
On further examination, these emo rockers are trying to be like their not-so-emo counterparts, Weezer. However, by comparison, Weezer could run circles around these guys. Diffuser is even better than Jimmy Eat World.
Overall, the only reason I can find to buy this CD is if it were being sold at Amoeba Music for about $2.99.
